Diamond in the Rough
Through wonderful source material, including Rihanna’s “Diamonds”, we explore all facets of a diamond in this impactful show that works on multiple levels. Not only does this show lend itself perfectly to a visual reveal of diamonds, it also is an opportunity to help teach your students that we are all a Diamond in the Rough.
The angular opener depicts the rough beginning before the diamond is revealed. After the opening hit, soli moments passed around the ensemble help you take the eye and ear from one section to another. With dark uniforms and flags and creative drill design, you can explore the compression and rough exterior before the diamond is revealed.
The ballad is the perfect opportunity to chip away at the rough exterior and begin to expose the diamond within through the use of a beautiful love theme combined with Rihanna’s “Diamonds.” Consider a gradual color guard uniform or color pallet change here from darks to bright and iridescent for maximum impact at the ballad climax. The impact, using Rihanna’s familiar theme, is the perfect time for a prop change to reveal a shining, shimmering diamond.
The closer lets you fully display the diamond with the use of “Palladio” by Karl Jenkins, made popular in jewelry commercials, before revisiting Rihanna’s famous hit. This would be a wonderful opportunity to add sparkle and shine to everyone on the field through bright flags, props, and perhaps a simple uniform transition for the band. Consider the use of lighting to really take this show to a new level.
